Archives have the duty to acquire, preserve and promote their collections as a contribution to safeguarding the natural, cultural and scientific heritage. Their collections are a significant public inheritance and are protected by Federal and State legislation. Archival documents of historical interest should be shared with the public through both online and physical exhibit venues when possible and appropriate to resources and other restrictions inherent in the documents. Inherent in this public trust is the notion of stewardship that includes rightful ownership, permanence, documentation, accessibility and responsible disposal.
